Silver mining dominated the landscape in the late 1800’s until the mines played out. After a relatively dormant period in the early 1900s, the presentation ends showing recreational skiing breathing new life into the canyon with the opening of Alta in 1939.

“Music for Your Eyes” presented by John Collins

Join World Champion skier and Alaska helicopter skiing pioneer Dean Cummings for a night of big mountain skiing celebration. This jam packed night premiers “It’s Our Time”, a film on the evolution and development of Alaska big mountain revolution. After the film, Cummings hosts a question and answer session discussing the latest and greatest protocols and techniques that allows us to take our skiing to the next level. Don’t miss out on this night of fun!

Dr. Taylor has make over 25 canoeing and kayaking trips to Northern Alaska, Northern Canada and Greenland including two solo trips. Typically, he and his companions are dropped off by float plane at the headwaters of a northern river and are picked up by float plane or reach a small village 3-4 weeks later. He will try to share the beauty and excitement of the Arctic rivers and land that has taken him north year after year. He also summarizes the logistics of such a trip, highlights selected rivers and describes the challenges posed by rapids, bears and mosquitoes.

“Nuptse the Crystal Snake” presented by Willie Benegas
In the spring of 2003, the 50th year celebration of Everest, the Patagonian twins Damian and Willie Benegas pulled off a daring alpine style ascent of Nuptse. As members of the “American 2003 Nuptse Expedition”, the two Mountain Guides forged an impressive new route up the North Face, calling it The Crystal Snake, 5.9 M4 WI5. In this presentation, Willie will highlight the difficulties and rewards of Himalayan climbing and the frailty of life.

Mike finally got a chance to climb to the Top of the World. Is it really all about the top or is it about the journey. Mike will try to answer these questions for you.

“Glaciers—Their Gift to Snowbird/Alta” presented by Joe Gates
Did you know that ancient glaciers actually created most of the features of the ski areas of Little Cottonwood Canyon? This presentation describes glaciers and how they changed the landscape, followed by the story of glaciations in Little Cottonwood Canyon and relates all this to skiing at Snowbird & Alta.
